CARMEL, Ind. — The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) continued to build on its vision to be the most reliable, value-creating regional transmission organization in 2018, delivering between $3.2 billion and $3.9 billion in benefits to the region.

“MISO’s latest Value Proposition study continues to document the substantial annual savings we are able to generate for the region we serve,” MISO Chief Executive Officer John Bear said. “Creating savings and benefits for our membership is at the core of our vision and mission.  We strive every day to drive those results through enhanced reliability, more efficient use of the region’s transmission and generation assets and the ability to avoid costly new assets.”

Results of the 2018 Value Proposition study were reviewed with stakeholders during a Feb. 15 meeting.

MISO’s analysis identifies and calculates several factors that drive positive value for the region: improved reliability, energy dispatch, unified regulation market, spinning reserves, wind integration, compliance, footprint diversity, improved generator availability and demand response. In addition, MISO’s efficient operations have resulted in a relatively flat cost structure that amounts to only a small percentage of overall value.

Among the top value drivers in 2018:

From 2007 through 2018, studies reveal that MISO has delivered an estimated $24.3 billion in benefits to the region.

“In a rapidly transforming industry, MISO continues to deliver technological, economic and innovative solutions that benefit our members and stakeholders,” added Wayne Schug, MISO vice president of Strategy & Business Development. “The quantitative results, as outlined in the 2018 Value Proposition study, as well as the more qualitative value-adds of information transparency, planning coordination and seams management, continue to demonstrate the positive impact MISO provides to customers and stakeholders.”

More information about the Value Proposition study, including its calculations, assumptions and supporting information, is available on MISO’s website.
